Item No.: 9416 Price : SOLD
Item : EXCELLENT SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1884 TRAPDOOR RIFLE, .45-70
Description :
This is an original, U.S. Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle manufactured at Springfield Armory in 1887. It is chambered for the .45-70 Government cartridge. The Model 1884 used a heavier bullet than its predecessors, 500 grains as opposed to the earlier 405 grain bullet. It also employed the new Buffington rear sight, adjustable for windage and elevation. This was a standard infantry arm of the Indian War period. This rifle is in excellent condition. It retains more than 95% of its original factory blued finish. There is some streaking of the finish on the trigger plate behind the trigger guard. There is some light wear on the heel of the butt plate. There is a slight graying of the blue on the lock plate. The breech block and barrel tang have nearly 100% of their case colored finish remaining. The bore and mechanics are excellent. The stock is in very fine condition with a few small dings from storage. There is a crisp "1887" dated inspector's cartouche on the left side of the wrist and an equally sharp "P" firing proof just behind the trigger guard. This is an outstanding example of a Model 1884 Trapdoor rifle. Stock no. 25226
