Item :	FINE ANTIQUE U.S. SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1898 KRAG-JORGENSEN RIFLE

Description :

This is an original, U.S. Springfield Model 1898 Krag-Jorgensen Rifle manufactured in 1898 and chambered for the .30-40 Government cartridge. Approximately 330,000 were made between 1898 and 1903. The M1898 Krag had the the shortest service life of any U.S. arm, replaced by the M1903 Rifle just 5 years after production began. The Krag was the first U.S. Rifle to fire smokeless ammunition. This rifle's serial number places the gun in the antique category under federal law. The rifle is in fine condition with about 80% of its factory blued finish remaining. There is some finish loss on the barrel band, edges of the magazine cover, and the trigger guard. The nose cap and butt plate have turned brown. The rifle has excellent mechanics and a very fine bore. The stock is in fine condition with the usual small dings and scratches from use. There is a crisp "1898" dated inspector's cartouche on the left side of the wrist and an equally sharp "P" firing proof just behind the trigger guard. This is a nice untouched antique Krag.
