Here is an original, Civil War, U.S. Model 1861 Rifle Musket of .58 caliber. The Model 1861 eliminated the Maynard tape primer of the earlier Model 1855 Rifle musket and was the standard U.S. Musket of the Civil War. Though Springfield production ended in 1862, production by contractors continued right through the end of the war. It served from the opening shots to the surrender at Appomattox. This is one of the contract rifle muskets. It was produced by the Savage Revolving Firearms Company of Middletown, Connecticut in 1863. Savage produced a total of 25,520 muskets from 1862-1864. This particular musket went to the state of New Jersey to equip its troops. It is stamped "NJ" on the left flat of the stock and on the barrel. It is in excellent condition with the barrel, lock, and furniture finished factory bright. It remains more than 98% bright with just a few tiny specks of brown patina. The bore and mechanics are excellent. The lock works perfectly and the bore remains bright and shiny with sharp rifling. The oil finished stock is in very fine condition with just a few small dings from use or storage. The musket is complete with sling swivels and the original ramrod. This is a very fine Civil war Rifle Musket in super condition. Stock no. 16316
