Item :	U.S. MODEL 1841 MISSISSIPPI RIFLE BY ROBBINS & LAWRENCE

This is an original U.S. Model 1841 Rifle produced by Robbins and Lawrence in 1851. The firm of Robbins and Lawrence produced 15,000 of these rifles from 1848 to 1853. Known as the "Mississippi" rifle by virtue of its service with Jefferson Davis's Mississippi Regiment in the Mexican American War, the Model 1841 soldiered on into the Civil War. It was used by both sides. In addition, settlers bound west on the Oregon Trail could purchase one of these rifles from the government. They are referrred to as jaegers or yaugers in contemporary accounts. Originally, the M1841 fired a patched .54 round ball. This rifle remains in its original caliber with the original rifling. It is in very good condition. The barrel retains about 40% of its original factory brown finish mixed with a smooth brown patina. On arms with browned finishes, it can sometimes be hard to tell where the browning ends and the patina begins. The case hardened lock and hammer have darkened to an almost black color. The trigger and swivels have turned brown. The brass furniture has a nice golden brass patina. The lock works well and the bore is in very good condition. The grooves are dark and there are a few small pits, but the lands are mostly bright with strong edges. The original walnut stock is in very good condition. There are the usual small dings and scratches from use. The initials "W D" are carved into the left side of the butt stock. The original inspector's cartouches are faintly visible on the left flat of the stock. The brass tipped ramrod appears to be original. The Mississippi Rifle is a great historic arm, with service in two wars and in America's Westward expansion. This is a very nice example. Stock no. 25168
