Item No.: 9348 Price : SOLD
Item : FINE, ORIGINAL WWII U.S. INLAND M1 CARBINE, CORRECT AS BUILT
Description :
This is an original, WWII U.S. M1 Carbine manufactured by the Inland Division of General Motors. This carbine is from the third block of production, probably made in May or June of 1944. It remains in "as built" condition, with all of its original parts, having never been through a rebuild. Carbines built at this time reflect some of the changes and improvements to the design. This one has an oval-cut low wood stock with a 2 rivet handguard. It is marked "IO" in the sling well and the on the underside of the hand guard. The ordnance wheel cartouche was only partially struck due to the curvature of the stock, but what is there is crisp. The barrel band is an Inland Type II marked with "PI" in a triangle. The rear sight is the milled type adjustable example correctly marked "PI". The bolt is Type II flat bolt marked "IO". The trigger group is marked with vertical Inland logo. The magazine catch is the Type IV marked with an "M" on the face and the "EI" Inland marking. The carbine has a Type IV slide marked "PI" in the slide well and with the part number "7160091" on the bottom. The Inland manufactured barrel is dated "5-44" with a milled front sight marked "N". This carbine is in fine to very fine condition with more than 95% of its original parkerized finish remaining. There is a touch of light finish wear on the barrel and the butt plate has heavier finish wear. The bore and mechanics are excellent. The stock is in very fine condition and may be the prettiest wood I have seen on an M1 carbine. It is made of burled walnut with beautiful figure. There is even burled walnut in the handguard, matching the stock. The hardness of the burl may account for the light strike of the cartouche. Included is an original WWII Type I magazine made by Underwood. Untouched, "as built" M1 Carbines are harder and harder to find. This is an excellent example. Stock no. 25036
