Item :	FINE PEABODY RIFLE IN .45-70 CALIBER W/ VERNIER TANG SIGHT

This is an original Peabody Rifle manufactured by the Providence Tool Company of Providence, Rhode Island. Produced from 1866 to 1871, the majority of Peabody Rifles were made for foreign contracts. Peabody rifles were ordered by Spain, Mexico, and France chambered for the .43 Spanish cartridge. In the United States, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and South Carolina contracted for Peabody Rifles. Some of the Connecticut rifles were later converted to .45-70. This rifle was made for a foreign contract. It has the cartouche of company inspector "WC" that is present on all foreign contract Peabody rifles. This rifle has been professionally bored out, relined, and chambered for the .45-70 cartridge. It has also been fitted with a high quality vernier tang sight of recent manufacture and a longer front sight blade. The rifle is in fine condition. The full length 33" barrel retains more than 95% of its blued finish. The barrel bands and butt plate are turning a smooth brown. The receiver and hammer retain about 80% of their original case colored finish which has darkened a bit with age. The color on the lock plate has mostly turned gray. The rifle has an excellent bore and excellent mechanics. The stock and forend are in fine condition with just a few small dings and scratches from use. There are a couple of chips along the cleaning rod channel. The inspector's cartouche is visible on the left side of the wrist. The tang sight is in excellent condition with all of its finish remaining. If you want a distinctive rifle for shooting black powder cartridges, you can't beat a Peabody. This is a great looking example in a popular chambering. Stock no. 24924
