Item :	ENGLISH MADE, S. ISAAC, CAMPBELL & CO. CONFEDERATE CAVALRY SABER

Here is an original, Confederate Cavalry Saber manufactured for S. Isaac, Campbell & Co. of London, England. When the Civil War started, the South was largely agrarian with little manufacturing capability. In 1861, the fledgling Ordnance Department for the Confederate States Government sent their Chief Purchasing Agent, Captain Caleb Huse, to England to acquire the material needed to wage war against the industrialized Northern States. Captain Huse quickly began dealing with S. Isaac, Campbell & Co. to procure the needed arms. They would become a leading supplier to the Confederacy. This sword is of a pattern made specifically for S. Isaac, Campbell to ship to the Confederacy and not for any other purpose. It is in fine condition with its original iron scabbard. The blade is mostly bright with a speckling of fine pitting and dark patina. While the outside of the guard is bright, the inside surface has a dark brown patina. The handle is made of boiled leather with an impressed checkering, typical of English swords of the time. It is in fine condition. There is a collection number, "X-8", electro penciled on the left ricasso of the blade. No other markings are present. Many items intended for the Confederacy were purposely left unmarked. The iron scabbard is in fine condition as well. It is finely pitted over much of its surface. It has been lightly cleaned to bright leaving fine speckles of brown patina on the metal. There is an old paper collection tag that says "Confederate Cavalry" and "Sharpsburg, Md." (Them as is Yankees would know this as Antietam). This is a fine old sword made specifically to be shipped to the Confederacy. Stock no. 24864
