Description :
Here is an original, U.S. Model 1890 Trapdoor Cavalry Carbine manufactured by Springfield Armory and chambered for the .45-70 cartridge. The M1890 designation is a collector's term. The last production Trapdoor carbine was the Model 1884. In the early 1890's Springfield Armory used up their remaining trapdoor parts to build these carbines for National Guard Units across the country. In addition, existing carbines were altered during this time. The main difference was the barrel band which has a hump in front of the sight to act as a buffer when the carbine is slipped into the leather carbine boot. These were the very last of the Trapdoor carbines. This one is in fine condition. Arsenal refinished when altered, it retains about 80% of its blued finish. There is some mottling of the finish on the barrel, some wear on the barrel band, and some finish wear on the corners of the receiver. The carbine has excellent mechanics. The bore is good. There is some light pitting in areas, but for the most part the rifling is strong. The stock is very good with an even dark color. There are the usual small dings and scratches from use. There are some small punctures of the wood on the right side of the butt that have been filled. This appears to be a very old repair. The original cleaning rod is still in the butt trap. This is a nice example of the last of the Trapdoor Carbines. Stock no. 24703
