RARE TYPE II SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1812 FLINTLOCK MUSKET
Description :
Here is a rare, U.S. Model 1812 Flintlock Musket manufactured at Springfield Armory in 1816. This is a Type II Model 1812 with an 1813 dated lockplate and an 1816 dated butt plate. This combination of dates is known to be correct on a Type II, as Springfield was using up old parts in inventory. This is one of the few instances where mismatched dates are absolutely correct. The Type II can be identified by the use of short spring loaded lugs to hold the barrel bands in place rather than the standard long springs used on the Types I and III. Exact production numbers are noy known, but believed to be between 5,000 - 10,000. This musket is in fine condition. It appears to be basically untouched. It has a steel colored patina with an over scattering of brown patina. There are a few dings and some vise marks on the barrel near the breech. The lock works very well. The bore is dark and has significant pitting. The stock is in fine condition with a few small dings and scratches from use. There is a box with an "X" scratched into the right side of the butt that sure looks like a simple rendering of the Confederate Flag! This is a very nice, as found, U.S. Model 1812 Musket. Stock no. 24114
