RARE 2ND MODEL VIRGINIA MANUFACTORY FLINTLOCK RIFLE
Description :
This is a very rare 2nd Model Virginia Manufactory Flintlock Rifle manufactured in Richmond, Virginia in 1818. The 2nd model type rifles, produced from 1812-1821, featured a 39" full octagon barrel of .50 caliber. They were brass mounted with a large, plain brass patchbox. The rifles were full stocked with the barrel fastened by wedges. Only about 1,700 were made and relatively few have survived. This rifle is in very good condition. It has been pretty heavily cleaned leaving the brass bright and the barrel and lock armory bright. There is a very light speckling of brown on the barrel. Any dings or tiny scratches on the brass that were not polished out have a dark patina within. The ramrod pipes are quite thin and have a few tiny dents on them. The front pipe has a crack along the bottom. The lock works very well. The bore is dark and dusty with some rusting, but the deep cut rifling is strong. The stock has seen some restoration. It has been sanded and restained with several small filled dings or gouges. There is a repaired crack on the left side of the stock running from the barrel channel to the side plate. The stock has been stretched with the forend replaced from the ramrod entry thimble forward. The ramrod is new. The nose cap may be a replacement as well. Even with the overcleaning and heavy stock restoration, this is an exceptionally rare rifle. Stock no. 24410
