SUPERB SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1863 TYPE II RIFLE MUSKET
Description :
This is an original, U.S. Springfield Model 1863 Type II Rifle Musket manufactured in 1864. Also known as the Model 1864, the Type II marked a return of the barrel band retention springs that had been eliminated on the earlier Model 1863. The Model 1863 was based on the Model 1861 Special Musket produced by Colt, Amoskeag, and the firm of Lamson, Goodnow, and Yale. It featured a redesigned lockplate and hammer, eliminated the clean out screw on the bolster, and used rounded barrel bands held in place by a tightening screw. These bands would loosen as the wood contracted and in 1864 Springfield went back to the retention spring. This musket is in excellent condition. It remains as built with nearly 100% of its factory bright finish intact with just a couple of tiny specks of brown. The lock retains nearly 100% of its dark case colored finish. The lock works perfectly and the gun has an excellent bore with strong rifling. The stock is beautiful with crisp inspector's cartouches. There are a couple of tiny dings that have been smoothed and a small scratch on the belly of the stock behind the lower band. There is a small filled spot on the right side of the stock just ahead of the middle band. This is as fine an example of the Model 1863 as you are likely to encounter, a musket that was a mainstay in the last two years of the Civil War. Stock no. 24112
