Here is an original, U.S. Model 1881 Holster. The Model 1881 holster was intended to be used with the Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army or the Smith & Wesson Schofield Revolvers. The flap has two separate holes on the flap that fit over the closure stud. This allowed the flap to close over either revolver, accommodating the differences in their shape. The M1881 was a standard holster of the late Indian War period serving into the Spanish American War. This is an early example that has been arsenal modified with a larger belt loop to accommodate the new Model 1895 woven cartridge belt. This belt, with double cartridge loops, carried 100 rounds of .30-40 Krag ammunition and was quite bulky. Existing holsters were modified to fit. They can be identified by the six rivets attaching the belt loop. Later holsters that were purpose built for the M1895 belt had only three rivets. This holster is in very good condition. There is some surface cracking of the leather on the flap at the fold point. There is a one inch crack on the front top of the holster and the flap has cracked across the two closure holes. The body of the holster is stiff but maintains a good shape with no flattening. The toe plug is missing, but these were often removed by the trooper carrying the revolver. The holster is nicely marked on the belt loop with the name "Lanz, Owen & Co." of Chicago. The inspector initials "G.P." are stamped on the flap. The large stamped "US" oval is crisp.
