Item :	RARE, U.S. SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1795 FLINTLOCK MUSKET

Here is an original, Type I, U.S. Model 1795 Flintlock musket manufactured at Springfield Armory in 1801. When adopted in 1795, these muskets were referred to in correspondence as the "Charleville Pattern". They were a close copy of the French Model 1763 Charleville that was widely used by America during the Revolution. This was the first official, standardized musket made for the U.S. Government, the first arm to be produced by the new U.S. Armories, and the very first model of firearm produced at Springfield Armory. The Type I was the first example of these muskets to have markings and was made from 1799-1802. They are .69 caliber with a barrel length of about 44 1/2". This musket is in antique fine condition. It has an overall smooth, mottled brown patina. Some areas exhibit very fine pitting. The mechanics work well, with the lock and trigger functioning properly. The bore is dark with areas of pitting. There is a small bulge, about the size of a pea, on the left side of the barrel directly below the bayonet lug. I can't determine the cause, but it was possibly a small flaw in the iron of this very early barrel. The stock is in fine condition. It may have been lightly cleaned sometime in the past.There is an old crack on the left side running from the forward lock bolt to the barrel channel. A small chip is missing from the wood at the barrel channel. The letters "I S" are stamped into the left flat of the stock. The lock plate has the early arcing "SPRINGFIELD" marking with the Eagle over "US" ahead of the hammer. The date of manufacture, "1801", is stamped on the upper tang of the butt plate. Original, untouched Model 1795 Muskets are very hard to find and a key piece of any U.S. Military Long Arm collection. Stock no. 24112
