Item No.: 9032 Price : SOLD
Item : MATCHED PAIR OF FLINTLOCK POCKET PISTOLS BY BERLEUR
Description :
This is a matched pair of Flintlock Pocket Pistols made by Guillaume Berleur in Liege, Belgium. Berleur was a gunmaker in Liege from 1780 until 1840. These pistols are typical of those made in the late 18th or early 19th century . They are of center hammer, turn barrel design, requiring the barrel to be removed for loading. Once the chamber was loaded and a ball placed over the charge, the barrel was screwed back into place over the load. This was accomplished with a small wrench that was supplied with pistol. There is a small lug on the outside of the barrel over which the wrench fitted. These wrenches are almost always missing, as is the case here. These pistols are in very good to fine condition. The metal has a dark steely pewter patina with a mottling of dark brown. One pistol's action works perfectly, with half and full cock. The other pistol has no half cock position, but will come to full cock and fire when the trigger is pulled. The smooth bores are dark, but do not appear to be too badly pitted. The one-piece walnut grips are in very good condition with just a couple tiny dings from use. Each has a German Silver thumbpiece, neither of which is engraved. The name "Berleur" is engraved in script on both sides of each pistol. These little pistols are often seen singly. It is quite interesting to see a matched pair. Stock no. 24241
