Item No.: 9014 Price : SOLD
Item : RARE, ARMORY BROWN SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1816 FLINTLOCK MUSKET
Description :
Here is an original, U.S. Model 1816 Flintlock Musket manufactured at Springfield Armory in 1830. This is a Type II musket. This type was manufactured between 1822 and 1831. They had an arsenal browned finish on all parts except the lock. These muskets, with their brown finish intact, are very rare. In this era, the muskets in the hands of the troops were finished Armory Bright. As the new browned muskets were issued, the officers would often require the soldiers to polish the browned finish off, so they would match the bright finish of the other guns. As a result, very few of these muskets retain their original browned finish. This particular musket is in fine condition. It retains about 90% of its original browned finish. These muskets were rust browned and then coated with lacquer. This gun is overall brown with about 10-15% of the lacquer worn off. The lock has developed a smooth brown patina with a touch of rust behind the frizzen spring. The lock works well. The bore is dark and has some pitting. The stock is in fine condition. It has a few small dings and scratches from use and storage. The inspector's cartouches are crisp and clear. This is a rare and particularly desirable American Martial Arm. Stock no. 24109
