EXCELLENT HARPER'S FERRY U.S. MODEL 1842 MUSKET & BAYONET
Description :
Here is an original, U.S. Model 1842 Musket manufactured at Harpers Ferry Armory in 1850. It is a percussion, .69 caliber smooth-bore arm. The M1842 has the distinction of being the first U.S. Percussion musket design adopted by the United States. It was also the last smooth-bore musket design manufactured. It was replaced by the M1855 Rifle-Musket. They continued to be issued and were used throughout the Civil War. This musket is in excellent condition. It remains nearly 100% Armory Bright, as finished. There is an occasional tiny speck of patina. The mechanics work perfectly. The bore has not been as well maintained as the exterior of the musket. It is a little dark and there is some pitting. The stock has been lightly sanded and cleaned, but the cartouches remain faintly visible on the left flat of the stock. The original bayonet is also mostly armory bright. There are some small splotches of brown patina and there is a small area of light pitting near the tip. Most '42 Muskets saw hard use, both before and during the Civil War. This is a striking example. Stock no. 24102
