Item No.: 9005 Price : SOLD
Item : VERY FINE REVOLUTIONARY WAR ENGLISH HUNTING SWORD
Description :
Here is an original, Revolutionary War Officer's Hunting Sword (Cuttoe) of London manufacture, circa 1770. Many officers, both American and English, favored the hunting sword over the traditional hanger. These swords typically had an "S" shaped guard with a chain replacing the knuckle bow. George Washington himself carried a sword of this type during the American War for Independence. This particular sword is in very fine condition. Beautifully made, it is silver mounted with a bone grip. The pommel cap features a grotesque mask. The bone grip is carved in a spiral pattern. There is a silver cap just in front of the guard which sealed the scabbard and prevented rain from entering. The sword is 33 inches long overall with a 27 3/4 inch blade. The blade has a shallow curve with a double fuller. The upper fuller terminates at the beginning of the blade's false edge, 5 1/2 inches from the tip. The lower fuller ends 1 inch from the tip. The blade has a bright pewter patina with some dark mottling. There are some small areas of light pitting. The grip is very fine with a couple of small hairline cracks running along the grain of the bone. The chain bow mounts to a loop on the pommel and another on the lower quillon of the guard. This is a superb Revolutionary War sword. Stock no. 24059
