Item No.: 9003 Price : SOLD
Item : BEAUTIFUL, 17TH CENTURY ENGLISH OFFICER'S HANGER
Description :
Here is an English Officer's Hanger (Sword) dating to the first half of the 17th century. Formerly in the Harold L. Peterson collection, this sword has an oral history that places it in the colony of Virginia as early as 1635. It was carried during the American Revolution and this actual sword is pictured on page 62 of "Swords and Blades of the American Revolution" by George C. Neumann. The sword is 31" long with a 25 5/8" blade. The blade is single edged with a single 20" fuller. The grip is wood. It has an iron, semi-shell, basket-type hilt to protect the users hand. The hanger is in fine condition with an overall pewter gray patina with a scattering of darker brown. The blade shows some light pitting and there are some small nicks in the edge. The blade was etched, but this has worn with use and is very faint. There are touch marks on both ricassos. The bow of the guard has an old blacksmith repair using two forged rivets that probably dates to the time of the Revolution. The wooden grip is in fine condition with just a couple of tiny dings from use. This is a truly great early sword with strong ties to Virginia. Stock no. 24061
