Item :	EARLY, PRE-PEARL HARBOR U.S. M-1 RIFLE

Description :

This is an original, 5-digit serial number, U.S. M-1 Garand Rifle manufactured at Springfield Armory in August of 1940. This makes it one of the first rifles built with a gas port rather than the earlier gas trap system. The rifle was rebuilt at Springfield Armory in 1942, where it was given a new barrel and a new replacement stock with the butt trap for the oiler and tool. Subsequently, it was upgraded with a "cut" operating rod and several small replacement parts. Most of the parts date to the 1942 rebuild, but the op rod is later. The rifle is in fine condition with about 85% of its original factory parkerized finish remaining. There is some overall light finish wear on the receiver. The gas cylinder and lock have the usual finish wear. The rifle has excellent mechanics and a very fine bore. The stock is in very good condition with the usual small dings and scratches associated with use in the field. There is a strong Springfield Armory re-build cartouche on the left side of the stock with "S.A. over "S". The "P" firing proof is present on the front of the pistol grip. Pre-WWII M-1 Garand Rifles are quite scarce and this is the earliest one I have had. Stock no. 23898
