RARE, CIVIL WAR, J. HENRY & SON PERCUSSION RIFLE
Description :
This is an original, Civil War Percussion Rifle manufactured by "J. Henry & Son" of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. These rifles are rare with a total production of only about 600 in 1861 and 1862. It is believed they were made for a Pennsylvania state contract. It is a .58 caliber, brass mounted rifle with a 35" barrel and a Sharps style patchbox. They were to be used with a saber bayonet and have a mounting lug on the right side of the barrel. These rifles share some characteristics with the contract arms of "P.S. Justice", another Philadelphia maker. The most noticeable similarity is the reverse curved trigger guard, identical to the Justice type. This rifle is in very fine condition. The iron barrel and lock have a pewter patina, overspeckled with some brown. The brass furniture has a great yellow bronze patina. The lock mechanism works well. The bore is very good. These rifles had very shallow rifling (as in almost non-existent), and this one is no exception. The bore is clean and the rifling is there, but very hard to see. It almost looks like a smoothbore. The walnut stock is in very fine condition, with the exception of an area on the right side of the stock behind the upper band. It looks like it was burned or had acid spilled on it. It is about 2 1/2" long. There is a small crack running from the lock plate up to the end of the barrel tang. The remainder of the stock has just a couple of tiny dings and scratches from use. The stock has a distinct cast to it, with the butt curving toward the left. This is a great example of a rare Civil War rifle. Stock no. 23741
