This is an extraordinary, contemporary American Long Rifle made by the late Master Gunmaker William Buchele. Buchele was one of the early makers striving to recreate the Long Rifle and has long been considered one of the truly great builders. His book "Recreating the American Longrifle" is still in print and an essential book for those wishing to build Kentucky Rifles. This rifle is probably one of the last he made. It commemorates the American Bicentennial of 1976 and Mr. Buchele passed away in 1977. The rifle is a masterpiece of the gun builder's art. It is extensively covered in raise relief carving, decorative inlays, and incised wire decoration. All of the metal work is beautifully engraved, with the exception of the cheek piece and a thumb piece. These have been left blank to allow for personalization of the rifle. The rifle is .45 caliber with a 43" barrel. The brass patchbox has two piercings and has a casting of the Liberty Bell on the lid. The lid is engraved "1776-1976". The side plate is marked "Liberty or Death". Mr. Buchele's rifles often featured a raised relief carving behind the cheek rest, often of historical events. This rifle has a carving of George Washington astride his horse. All of the inlay on this rifle is brass, silver or German silver. It is extensive and beautifully done. The rifle is in excellent condition, with nearly all of the browned finish remaining on the barrel. The brass has a golden bronze patina. The lock mechanics and bore are excellent. There are some light flint scratches on the frizzen, but it would not surprise me if the rifle had not been fired since it was built. The rifle is signed on the top flat of the barrel and on the lock. If you would like a true masterpiece of American rifle building by one of its masters, this is the rifle you have been looking for.
