Item : REMINGTON NEW ARMY MODEL 1858 CARTRIDGE CONVERSION REVOLVER
Description :
This is an Old West gunsmith cartridge conversion of a Remington Model 1858 New Model Army .44 percussion Revolver. It has been converted to fire a .44 centerfire cartridge, probably the .44 Russian or .44 American. The Remington New Model Army was the 2nd most carried revolver of the war. With its solid frame and back strap, it was also the strongest, and many thought the Remington to be superior to the Colt. Approximately 122,000 of these were produced between 1863 and 1875. About 90,000 had been manufactured by wars end. The revolver's popularity continued after the war with many being carried into the Great American West. The revolver's strength made it a natural candidate for cartridge conversion, with many being done by Remington at their factory. This is a well done conversion, but not a factory one. The back of the cylinder was machined off and the scalloped cut on the right side of the frame was deepened for cartridge loading. The barrel was shortened to 6 1/2", ending just in front of the loading lever latch. The hammer has been bobbed. The loading plunger was removed. A thin iron recoil shield has been added. The revolver is in fine condition. Only traces of the original blued finish remain, with the remainder having turned a smooth gray-brown. The gun has excellent mechanics and a very fine, shiny bore. I don't know the original purpose of the bobbed hammer, but it definitely makes the revolver harder to cock! It also makes it very difficult to lower the hammer safely on an unfired cartridge. The grips are in fine condition with most of their varnish remaining and just a few light dings from use. There are two notches cut into the edge of the butt on the left grip panel. This is a true Old West cowboy gun, one that could have been there long before the legendary Colt Single Action Army. Stock no. 23525
