Item :	SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1863 RIFLE MUSKET, TYPE II

Here is an original, .58 caliber U.S. Model 1863 Rifle Musket manufactured at Springfield Armory in 1864. Also known as the Model 1864, this was the last percussion arm and last muzzle loading arm produced at Springfield. The Type II differed from the earlier production guns by returning to the solid barrel bands retained by flat springs. Field usage showed that the earlier split barrel bands with a tightening screw tended to loosen and fall off, no matter how much the screw was tightened. This musket is in very fine condition. It remains almost 100% armory bright, except for the lock, which is color case hardened. This musket has been meticulously cared for over the years. The lock works perfectly and retains nearly all of its case colors. There are a few specks of patina on the lock plate. The bore is a little dark and there is some light pitting, but the rifling is strong along the bore's length. The stock is fine with just a couple of dings. It may have been lightly sanded or boned at one time. The inspector's cartouches on the left side of the stock are present, but faint. The Model 1864 Rifle-Musket saw extensive use in the latter part of the Civil War and is an important part of our history. This is a beautiful example. Stock no. 23349
