Description :
Here is an original, Early WWII, U.S. M-1 Garand Rifle manufactured by Springfield Armory in April of 1941. This is an interesting rifle. It was a pristine, untouched example that someone completely screwed up. It is, however, a gold mine of early parts in excellent condition. First, what is wrong! The owner refinished and reshaped the stock, removing all markings. The bolt has been replaced by a mid-war example. The rear sight is mid-war lock bar type. The operating rod catch is missing completely, but this is not a hard part to find. The most tragic alteration was to the original unfinished, Type I, stainless steel gas cylinder with the correct "D-35449-SA" draw number stamped on the right side of the ring. The cylinder's bayonet lug and stacking swivel mount have been completely ground off. Now, before the horror overwhelms you, on to what is right! The rifle retains nearly all of its early, dark gray/black parkerized finish. It has the complete, correct trigger group with the trigger housing marked "D28290-2-SA". The hammer and safety have the correct draw numbers. It has the correct, uncut operating rod marked "D35382 3 SA". It has a Type 3 one-piece follower rod. The handguard retains its original Type 2 arched lower band and the Type 1 grooved handguard clip. It has an unfinished stainless cylinder lock and single slot cylinder lock screw. The barrel is actually a little later than the receiver. It is marked "S-A-2-42", with the marking upside down. The bore is dark and rough. The action will work fine once a new operating rod catch is installed. At present the follower rises too high. The stock has been reshaped and varnished. This 1941 Garand rifle is a prime candidate for restoration. Stock no. 23297
