This is an original, Colt U.S. Army Model 1903 Double Action Revolver. This revolver is also known as the "Double Action .38 New Army", production of which began in 1892, when the Army decided to adopt a modern DA .38 revolver. Improvements were made to the design for several years with the final design culminating in the M1903. Combat experience with the .38 revolvers during the Philippine Insurrection proved them to have insufficient stopping power, leading to their replacement by the venerable Model 1911 .45 Auto. This revolver is in fine cobdition with more than 80% of its brilliant Colt blued finish remaining. The majority of finish wear is on the grip straps and the bottom of the trigger guard. There is a little light holster wear at the muzzle and on the high points of the gun. There are afew small dings and scratches in the finish from use and one small spot of patina on the barrel, smaller than a dime. The gun has excellent mechanics and a very fine, bright bore. The walnut grips are in fine condition with no chips or cracks and just a couple of tiny dings and scratches from use. The gun has crisp markings. It is marked 1903 on the left side of the frame and has inspector's initials on the frame and on the bottom of each grip. The butt is marked U.S. Army Model 1903 with the serial number. This is a very nice example of one of the U.S. Army's short-lived double action .38 revolvers. No U.S. Martial pistol collection is complete without one! Stock no. 23094
