SCARCE, CIVIL WAR, JOSLYN ARMY MODEL .44 CALIBER REVOLVER
Description :
Here is an original, Civil War, Benjamin F. Joslyn Army Model Revolver. Manufactured by the Joslyn Firearms Company of Stonington, Connecticut in 1861 and 1862, these heavy, 5-shot, .44 caliber percussion revolvers are quite scarce. Only about 3,000 were made, with the majority going to the state of Ohio. The lion's share of these pistols went to the 5th and 6th Ohio Cavalry. Small numbers are also known to have been issued to various Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, and Minnesota units. One hundred were purchased by the U.S. Navy in October, 1861. This revolver is in very good condition. It retains traces of its original, blued finish on protected areas like the underside of the barrel. The remainder of the blue on the barrels has turned brown. The trigger plate retains most of its blued finish. The frame and cylinder have a speckled brown and pewter patina. The mechanism on this gun works very well with the action locking up tightly. The chambers are a smooth brown and the bore is in fine condition. There are a few very tiny pits, but the bore is mostly smooth and shiny with sharp rifling. The original, checkered walnut grips are in good condition, dark and oily. There are a few small dings and scratches from use and a couple of small chips at the base of the grips. The base of the left grip panel has the initials "HDA" carved into the wood. The right grip has a small letter "K" stamped in the wood. This is a good example of a scarce Civil War Joslyn revolver. Stock no. 23095
