Description :
This is a mid-19th century, American, long barreled, smooth bore fowling piece made by "J. Stevens' or "I. Stevens". I do not know if this is an early gun by the founder of the Stevens Arms Co. The gun has a phenomenal 51", octagon to round barrel of .54 caliber made by E. Remington. The lock was made and is marked by "C. Baker". The gun uses a drum and nipple bolster, but I believe it was originally built this way as a percussion arm. The fowler is in very good condition with an overall mottled brown and pewter patina. There is some pitting around the drum bolster and nipple and on several spots along the barrel. The brass stock furniture has a nice dark bronze patina. The lock needs some work. It will hold at the half cock notch, but falls when moved to the full cock position. The bore is actually pretty good. It is dark with some light surface pitting, but it is mostly smooth. The stock is in good condition. This is a half stock gun with a poured pewter nose cap. It has German silver barrel key escutcheons and a double ended spindle inlay along the top of the comb. The wrist is checkered. There is an old repair to a chip in the wood along the barrel channel just ahead of the lock plate. There is a 1" crack along the barrel channel on the right side just behind the nose cap. The tapered ramrod is fitted with a ball screw on the narrow end and has been repaired about 4" from that end. This is an interesting gun with a barrel by one of America's preeminent gun makers and that long 51" barrel is a show stopper! Stock no. 22910
