R.WAGGONER PERCUSSION TARGET RIFLE, REMINGTON BARREL
Description :
This is a heavy barreled percussion bench or target rifle probably dating to the mid 1800's. It has a 34" barrel of about .38 caliber. The heavy barrel measures about 1 3/16" across the flats. This barrel was made by Remington Arms (at that time E. Remington & Sons) and is of the highest quality. It is stamped "REMINGTON" on the right barrel flat just ahead of the bolster. The back action lock is marked "A.W. Spies". Spies was a prominent dealer/agent in new York during the 1800's and probably supplied locks to gun makers. The top flat of the barrel is stamped "R. WAGGONER" over "SCHENECTADA". There was a gunmaker named Waggoner in Schenectady, New York at this time and I believe this is who built the rifle. The makers name is double stamped and a little hard to read. The rifle is in fine condition. The barrel is a smooth brown. The breech and lock retain much of their blued finish. The brass furniture has a nice golden patina. The lock and double lever/double set triggers work well. The bore is very fine. There are a few dark speckles, but the rifling is mostly bright and sharp. The curly maple stock is very fine as well, with just a few tiny dings from use. It is fitted with a poured pewter nosecap, The wedge escutcheons and stock inlays appear to be German Silver. There is a Squirrel inlay on the cheek rest and a hunting dog inlay on the right side of the stock. There is a small repair at the bolster. The original lollipop rear tang sight is present, as is the globe front sight. This is a fine old rifle that will probably shoot like a house afire! Stock no. 22903
