LARGE, "SPANG & WALLACE" PHILADELPHIA DERINGER
Description :
The success of Philadelphia gunmaker Henry Deringer's small pocket pistols spawned a wave of imitators. These small pistols became known collectively as "Deringers" and were made in large numbers by a number of individuals. "Spang & Wallace" of Philadelphia were among these imitators and produced and sold a number of pocket pistols. This is one of their larger examples. Dating to the 1850's, it has a 4" round barrel of about .44 caliber. The pistol is in very fine condition. The lock retains about 95% of its original blued finish. The barrel and trigger guard have a smooth brown patina. The entry thimble and wedge escutcheons are German Silver. The mechanics work very well. The bore is dark and rusty. The stock is very fine with an elongated grip that fits the hand well. This is a very nice example of one of Henry Deringer's chief competitor's guns. Stock no. 22889
