FINE, ENGLISH, BRASS FLINTLOCK POCKET PISTOL BY "TWIGG"

Description :
This is an original, brass, turn-barrel flintlock pocket pistol made by "TWIGG" of London, England. It has a Victorian proof, so probably dates to the early 1840's, right at the end of the flintlock era. Turn-barrel pistols were loaded by unscrewing the barrel, pouring powder into the chamber, and setting a ball in place on the cupped breech. The barrel was then screwed back into place, the pan charged, and the gun was ready to be fired. They generally came with a small wrench to facilitate removal of the barrel. This pistol has a brass frame and barrel, with an iron trigger guard, cock, and frizzen. It is about .44 caliber with a diminutive 1 1/2" barrel. It is in fine condition. The brass has a nice golden bronze patina. The iron has a smooth brown patina. The mechanism works partially. The trigger return spring does not return the trigger to the forward position, so the hammer will not stay cocked. You must physically hold the trigger forward while cocking the gun to get it to stay cocked. The smooth bore is dark with verdigris. The one-piece walnut grip is very fine. These little pistols were very popular and perfect for a gentleman's pocket or a lady's hand muff. Stock no. 22887
