Description :
|
This is an original, Winchester Model 1873 Saddle Ring Carbine manufactured in 1878 and chambered for the .44-40 (.44 WCF) cartridge. This is a Second Model 1873 with the checkered oval thumb rest on the dust cover. The Model 1873 has earned the title "The Gun That Won The West" and the .44 caliber carbine is the most sought variation. This carbine is in antique very good condition. It is complete and all original. There is little finish remaining. There are traces of the blued finish remaining around the barrel band and in the protected area between the magazine tube and barrel, with maybe 5% remaining. The remainder of the gun has a pewter steel patina with a light brown/orange cast. There is a little fine pitting on the sides of the frame and the front barrel band. The barrel and tang markings remain visible, but neither the barrel or brass elevator block is marked with the caliber. The mechanics work very well. The bore is a little dark and has some pitting, but the rifling is strongly visible along its length. The oil finished stock is in very good condition with the usual small dings and scratches from use. This is a good, solid example of an Old West '73 Saddle Ring Carbine. Stock no. 22900
