Item No.: 8625 Price : $2,195.00
Description :
This is an original Colt Model 1851 Navy .36 Caliber Percussion Revolver manufactured in 1856. This revolver was accepted by the U.S. Military and has the "U.S." stamp on the left side of the fame and Government inspector initials on various parts. Such revolvers are known as "Army" Navies. Earning its name from the Naval battle scene engraved on the cylinder, the '51 Navy was Colt's primary medium caliber revolver in the percussion era. Produced from 1850 until 1873, it was enormously popular and saw extensive use during the American Civil War by combatants on both sides. Thousands were carried into the Great American West both before and after the war. They traveled to the Gold Fields, along the Oregon Trail, and into every cow town in the West. Wild Bill Hickock favored the '51 Navy and carried a pair, butt forward, drawing the charges and reloading them each morning. This revolver is in antique good condition. It is complete and all matching, including the wedge. It has no finish remaining. The metal has an overall silvery and brown patina. There is some overall pitting on the gun, especially the cylinder. The mechanism works pretty well. The nipples are battered and one is broken off. The bore has a couple of significant pits, but mostly strong rifling. The grips are very good, with some overall wear and a small chip at the toe of the left scale. I can not see any inspector's cartouches. Martial Navies are fairly scarce guns. Stock no. 22860
