ANTIQUE U.S. SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1898 KRAG-JORGENSEN RIFLE
Description :
This is an original, U.S. Springfield Model 1898 Krag-Jorgensen Rifle manufactured prior to 1898 and chambered for the .30-40 Government cartridge. Approximately 330,000 were made between 1897 and 1903. The M1898 Krag had the the shortest service life of any U.S. arm, replaced by the M1903 Rifle just 5 years after production began. The Krag was the first U.S. Rifle to fire smokeless ammunition. Model 1898 Krag rifles made prior to serial number 152670 are considered to be antiques under Federal Firearms law. This rifle, in the 142,xxx range, qualifies as an antique. The rifle is in fine condition. It retains about 70% of its factory blued finish. The barrel retains most of its blue. The blue of the stock furniture is turning brown. The receiver has about 60% of its oil quenched black finish remaining. The finish on the magazine cover has a mottled black appearance. The rifle has excellent mechanics, but the bore is a little rough. It is dark and frosted with some pitting towards the muzzle. The rifling remains strong throughout. The stock is fine with just a few tiny dings and scratches from use. The Inspector's cartouche is faint but readable with an 1898 date. Someone has scratched ".30-40 Krag" under the Springfield Armory markings on the left side of the receiver. Model 1898 Krags that are antiques are fairly scarce. Stock no. 22799
