Item No.: 8592 Price : SOLD
Description :
This is an original, U.S. Model 1903 Service Rifle built at Springfield Armory and chambered for the .30-06 Government cartridge. The '03 Springfield was the standard U.S. battle Rifle of the First World War and is an iconic American military arm. It continued in service as a frontline arm in the early days of WWII and as a platform for firing rifle grenades right up to the end of the war. This is a WWI production rifle that was built in 1918. It was arsenal rebuilt in the late 1920's or 1930's, receiving a new barrel. The barrel on this rifle is of Springfield manufacture and is dated "7-27". A rifle rebuilt betwen the wars is a perfect example of the '03 Springfields carried in the opening days of WWII. It is exactly the type of rifle carried by the Marines on Guadalcanal. This rifle is in very good condition. It retains more than 90% of its dark black phosphate finish. It was probably redone during the rebuild. There is some finish wear on the bolt handle and on the cocking knob. The rifle has excellent mechanics and a fine bore with strong rifling throughout. The stock has the usual small dings and scratches associated with years of use. The hand guard is a military replacement and lighter in color, with fewer dings. There is a faint remnant of the inspector's cartouche on the left side of the wrist. This is a good, solid Springfield and a perfect example of a WWII rifle. Stock no. 22715
