WINCHESTER MODEL 1885 U.S. WINDER MUSKET
Description :
This is an original, Winchester Model 1885 Low Wall "Winder Musket" chambered for the .22 Short cartridge. Produced in 1918 and 1919, these training rifles were conceived by Colonel C.B. Winder, who advocated a training rifle approximating the weight and size of the service rifle, but chambered in .22 rimfire. This allowed for less expensive training and the use of indoor ranges. Winder Muskets were used for both military and civilian training. They were available in both .22 Short and .22 Long Rifle with 28 inch barrels. They are a falling block, single shot design. This is a U.S. Military marked example with an Ordnance Bomb and "U.S." stamped on the upper tang just behind the hammer. This rifle is in fine condition. It retains more than 90% of its original factory blued finish. The metal has a light freckling of patina overall. The butt plate and rear swivel have turned a dark brown. The Lyman adjustable rear target sight is beginning to turn brown. The rifle has an excellent bore and mechanics. The stock has darkened with a little with age and has a few small dings consistent with use. Overall it is in fine condition, but would benefit from a light cleaning to remove the grime. I said cleaning, not sanding or refinishing! This is a nice example of a Winder Musket. Stock no. 22777
