Item :	SHARPS MODEL 1853 HEAVY SPORTING RIFLE, .44 CALIBER

This is an original, Model 1853 Sharps Heavy Sporting Rifle of about 60 bore (.44 Caliber). The rifle has a 26" barrel measuring 1" across the flats. This was the first Sharps sporting rifle produced in significant numbers. Nevertheless, only 2,025 were made with 1,127 having a 60 bore. This rifle is in very good condition. It has seen much use and the metal is worn smooth. It was probably cleaned some time ago. The overall appearance of the metal is a silvery steel color with speckles of brown patina. The action works very well, with tight lock up of the breech. The bore is surprisingly good with deep sharp rifling along its length. There are a few specks of corrosion, but I believe this rifle will still shoot very well. The stock is very good. The forend is fitted with a pewter nose cap. The butt stock has a brass patch box and butt plate. These exhibit a nice golden brass patina. There appears to be an old repair to the stock just ahead of the patch box. It looks like a hole was filled with something, sanded, and stained. It is an old repair and matches the stock color almost perfectly. Only the absence of grain in this area tips you off. The rifle has double lever, double set triggers that work perfectly. If you enjoy shooting the originals, this rifle might be the one for you. Stock no. 22637
