Item No.: 8550 Price : $1,750.00
Item : AMERICAN SIDE LOCK DOUBLE BARREL KENTUCKY RIFLE
Description :
Here is an original, American Double Barrel Kentucky Rifle of the percussion era, ca. 1840-1850. It is built in an over/under configuration utilizing a "Double Mule Ear" sidelock. The rifle feature ramrod thimbles on both sides, between the barrels. This allows for a ramrod and a "wiping stick" for cleaning the bores. The barrels are 36" long. The top barrel is about .36 caliber and rifled. The bottom is about .44 caliber and smooth. The most striking feature of this rifle is its rare and desirable "Angel Gabriel Blowing The Trumpet" patchbox. This known design is made of German silver and has nine piercings. A stylized eagle, also of German silver, is inlet into the beaver tail cheek rest. The gun is unmarked. The rifle is in varying degrees of condition. The stock, with its beautiful decoration is very fine. The remainder of the gun is in good condition and could use a little professional restoration. The barrel attachment point is a little loose and has some wobble in it. The lock and mechanism needs some work. The hammers will not stay cocked. The ramrod channels on either side of the barrels is lined with a 2-piece brass gutter track, on which the ramrod pipes are soldered. Both forward pieces on either side are present with each having 3 pipes. The rear piece on the right is present, but the left side rear piece is missing. The forward gutters were cleaned at some time and have developed a golden bronze patina, but the remaining rear piece is dark and heavily patinated. This piece is no longer attached. The rifle's top bore has a little pitting, but shows strong rifling along its length. The smooth .44 bore is a little dark, with some areas of pitting. There is only a partial ramrod left on the right side of the gun. This is a rifle that qualifies as a true piece of American folk art. Such a gun is worthy of conservation and professional restoration. Stock no. 22551
