Item :	FINE, PALMETTO ARMORY, US MODEL 1842 MUSKET

Description :

This is an original, Contract U.S. Model 1842 Percussion .69 caliber Musket assembled at the Palmetto Armory of Columbia, South Carolina. Only 6,000 of these muskets were produced under contract for the state of South Carolina in 1852-1853. Most of the parts were manufactured in the North and assembled in South Carolina. These scarce muskets are considered to be a secondary Confederate arm. There is some variation in parts of these muskets, including the use of some surplus U.S. parts. Some had brass barrel bands. The bayonet lug was placed in one of two locations. It could be located on the top of the barrel for the standard Model 1842 bayonet or located on the bottom of the barrel for use with surplus Model 1816 bayonets. The barrels were made by William Glaze & Co. The lock plates are marked with a Palmetto tree encircled by "PALMETTO ARMORY S*C" forward of the hammer. The tail of the lock plate is marked "COLUMBIA" over "S.C. 1852". This musket is in very fine condition. It remains 99% armory bright with just a few tiny specks of corrosion. The mechanics are excellent. The bore is fair, with some pitting and dark areas. The stock is in fine condition. There are a couple of small chips along the ramrod channel. There is a small gouge in the wood behind the upper barrel band on the left side. The markings remain crisp. In addition to the Palmetto markings on the lock, the barrel is marked with "W.G & Co." and a Palmetto tree. The barrel tang is marked "S.C". This is a scarce and desirable Confederate longarm in beautiful condition. Stock no. 22655
