Item No.: 8536 Price : $1,850.00
Description :
This is a fine percussion sporting rifle probably dating to the 1840's or 1850's. The rifle was made by Anton Escherich of Baltimore, Maryland. It is a high grade, very well made half stock rifle with a 32" octagon to round barrel of about .54 caliber. The rifle is beautifully engraved. It has double set triggers and an expertly designed patent breech. This rifle has some distinctly German features. The rifle is in fine to very fine condition. The barrel was originally finished with a thin. almost fire blue. This finish is easily scratched and about 65% of it remains. The gun is iron mounted and was probably originally case colored. Traces remain on the lock and furniture, but the colors have faded to a silvery gray. The mechanics work well. The triggers need a little tweaking as the rear set trigger does not set. The front trigger functions properly. This may just need an adjustment of the set screw. The bore is very fine with sharp rifling along its length. The half stock is in fine condition with just a few small dings from use. The wrist features beautiful, cut checkering. The barrel is signed in script on the top flat with "A. Escherich Baltimore". The ornate rear sight, adjustable for windage and elevation and decorated with a wild boar, is also signed. The tiny elevation screw is missing. The ramrod is not of the same quality as the rifle and is probably a later replacement. It does appear to be a very old replacement. This fine old rifle should be a great shooter for the person who likes to fire the originals. Stock no. 22548
