Item No.: 8517 Price : SOLD
Item : RUSSIAN MODEL 1870 "BERDAN II" RIFLE AND BAYONET
Description :
Here is an original, Russian Model 1870 "Berdan II" Rifle manufactured in 1882 at Sestroryersk Arsenal and chambered for the 10.75x58R cartridge. Designed by American Colonel Hiram Berdan, this was the first bolt action rifle adopted by the Russian military. Prior to this, Russia had used a trapdoor type rifle, also designed by Berdan (The Berdan I). This rifle is in very fine condition, but it does have a mis-matched bolt. This is frequently the case. The barrel and receiver retain about 85% of their factory blued finish. Portions of the barrel are turning brown between the barrel bands. The stock furniture and cleaning rod have all turned a smooth light brown. The mechanics and bore are excellent. The bore is brilliant, bright and shiny with strong rifling. The stock is in excellent condition, with just a few tiny dings from storage. There are no markings on the stock at all. The stock does not appear to have been sanded. If it was sanded, it was many years ago. Included is an original cruciform bayonet in very fine condition. It retains nearly all of its factory blued finish. The bayonet is correct, but does not quite fit. It stops a fraction of an inch from seating completely. These rifles are usually found in terrible condition. Even with the mis-matched bolt, a Berdan II in this condition is almost unheard of. Stock no. 22478
