Item :	FINE, U.S. MODEL 1898 KRAG-JORGENSEN RIFLE

Description :

This is an original, U.S. Model 1898 Krag-Jorgensen Rifle manufactured at Springfield Armory in 1902 and chambered for the .30-40 Government cartridge. Approximately 330,000 of these rifles were made between 1898 and 1903. The M1898 Krag had the the shortest service life of any U.S. long arm, replaced by the M1903 Rifle just 5 years after production began. The Krag was also the first U.S. Rifle to fire smokeless ammunition. This Krag is in fine condition. The barrel retains about 90% of its factory blued finish. The stock furniture has a smooth, light brown patina. The oil quenched receiver has about 80% of its black finish remaining, with some speckling of the magazine cover and a little mottling of the left side plate. The bolt remains armory bright. The rifle has an excellent bore and mechanics. The stock is very fine with just a few small dings and scratches from use. There is a crisp "1902" dated cartouche on the left side of the wrist. The rifle is fitted with an early U.S. Model 1907 leather sling that is marked "Rock Island Arsenal". The leather is well oiled and dark. This is a nice example of a '98 Krag. Stock no. 22399
