RARE ENGLISH SINGLE ACTION PEPPERBOX REVOLVER

Description :
|
This is an English Pepperbox revolver made by Stocking & Co. of Worcester in the 1850's. It is a six-shot pepperbox of about .28 caliber with a 3 7/8" barrel. This is a rare, single action pepperbox. Nearly all pepperbox revolvers were made as double actions, fired by simply pulling the trigger. This rotated the barrel and raised the hammer, which fell as the barrel moved into position. This pistol must be cocked by depressing the lever on the top of the frame with your thumb. This moves the next chamber into position, leaving the gun cocked over a loaded barrel. The trigger was then pulled in a conventional manner to fire the pistol. It is the first one I have seen of this type. The pistol is in very good to fine condition. The metal has a silvery pewter patina overall. The mechanism works very well. The bores are good, dark but mostly smooth. The grips are in very fine condition with just a couple of tiny dings from use. Each has an inlaid metal diamond of silver or German silver. The barrel is marked on the flats between chambers. One has two proofs with "WARRANTED" and "CAST-STEEL". The other is stamped "STOCKING&CO. WORCESTER". The serial number "345" is stamped between the nipples. The hammer/cocking lever is stamped "PATENT SECURED 1848". The frame is tastefully engraved. This is an interesting and unusual pepperbox revolver. Stock no. 22243
