FINE, A.J. GOMPF 12 GA. PERCUSSION SHOTGUN

Description :
|
This is a fine percussion shotgun made by Andrew J. Gompf of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Andrew J. was the son of Kentucky Rifle Maker Andrew Gompf (sometimes spelled Gumpf). The Gompf family were prolific gunmakers in Lancaster throughout the 19th century. Andrew, the son, worked from about 1869 into the early 1900's. This percussion, 12 gauge, double barrel shotgun is a fine example of his work. The shotgun is in fine condition. The barrels were originally finished in a plum brown and about 80% of this finish remains. There is a little mottling of the finish on the right barrel and a couple small flecks of corrosion elsewhere. They remain mostly smooth and brown. The locks and hammers may have been color case hardened and a bit of this remains. Mostly they have faded to a dark blue/gray. The stock furniture has developed a smooth brown patina. Both locks wortk well. The bores are good. They need a cleaning and may have some very light pitting. They are mostly smooth. The walnut stock is in very good condition. There are a number of small dings and scratches from use and a circular ding in the checkering on the right side of the wrist. There is a hairline crack running forward from the right lock panel about 1'' long. It is just below the barrel. The decorative inlaid portion of the ramrod entry pipe has lifted from the wood. The metal is tastefully engraved with scroll work. The maker's name "A.J. GOMPF" is stamped on both locks and the barrel rib. This is a fine old percussion double in great condition. It is heavy, but perfect for someone who shoots blackpowder. Stock no. 22033
