Item No.: 8362 Price : $6,150.00
Item : VERY RARE, CIVIL WAR ERA, BURNSIDE SPORTING RIFLE
Description :
The Burnside Rifle Company is understandably famous for the Civil War Cavalry Carbine that bears their name. Designed by Union General Ambrose Burnside, the Burnside carbine was the third most used carbine of the Civil War, serving in many Union Cavalry regiments. Many people are unaware that they produced a very small number of sporting rifles for presentation and for commercial sales. They are quite rare and seldom encountered. This is one of those sporting rifles. It is built on a standard Burnside 5th Model frame. The receiver, lock, and butt plate are nickel plated. The rifle has an extra heavy, octagonal barrel measuring 1 1/4" across the flats. It is 24" long. The rifle is chambered for the standard .54 caliber Burnside cartridge. The stock is nicely figured with higher grade wood than the production carbines. The forearm is fitted with a poured pewter nose cap. The rifle is in fine to very fine condition. The barrel retains about 97% of its original blued finish, with just a hint of wear on the corners of the octagon. The lever and breech block retain about 80% of their factory blued finish. The outer surfaces of the lever, the lever release, and the trigger have turned a smooth brown. The nickeled parts retain about 90% of their finish, with a light speckling of brown patina. The butt has a bit more patina with about 60% of the nickel remaining. The bore and mechanics are excellent. The action locks up tightly and the bore is bright and shiny with strong rifling. The stock is in fine condition. The wood has darkened some with age, but has very few dings or scratches. The forearm has a small ding or two. The small decorative "ear" on the pewter nose cap has broken off on the right side of the gun, leaving a little semi-circular hole behind. This is a very rare rifle in outstanding condition. Stock no. 22015
