Item No.: 8358 Price : SOLD
Description :
This is an original, WWI, Remington Model 99 Rolling Block Military Rifle produced for the French Government and chambered for the 8mm Lebel Cartridge. The French designated this rifle the Model 1914. The French were desperately seeking arms to equip their forces against the Germans. Having some experience with the Remington Rolling Block from an earlier contract, they contracted for a new rifle chambered for their standard 8mm Lebel cartridge. The result was the Model 1914 which was issued as a secondary arm. This was the last variant of the venerable Rolling Block that Remington ever produced. This rifle has been arsenal refurbished. It has several small arsenal repairs to the stock. The receiver, originally case colored, has been blued. The remaining parts were originally blued and may have their original finish, as the markings on this rifle are crisp. It remains in fine condition, retaining more than 95% of its current blued finish. The hammer, breech block, butt plate, and rear swivel remain armory bright. The butt plate has some surface rusting that has turned to a brown patina. The bore and mechanics are excellent. The stock is fine as well with just a few small dings and scratches from use. The previously mentioned arsenal repairs are small and use wooden patches dovetailed in place. The stock has the French serial number "604" stamped on the left side of the butt and at the base of the handguard, a good indication that this rifle actually made it to France. This is a scarce and little known WWI French rifle. Stock no. 78D
