REMINGTON NEW MODEL ARMY .44 REVOLVER
Description :
Here is an original, Civil War Remington New Model Army .44 caliber percussion revolver. Approximately 122,000 of these were produced between 1863 and 1875. About 90,000 had been manufactured by wars end. This revolver's 39,xxx serial number places it squarely in the wartime production guns. The Remington was the 2nd most carried revolver of the war. With its solid frame and back strap, it was also the strongest, and many thought the Remington to be superior to the Colt. This Remington is in very good condition. There is just a trace of the original blue finish in the most protected areas. The metal is mostly smooth with a pewter patina. There are some areas of light pitting consistent with the weave of a piece of cloth wrapped around the gun. The cloth would have attracted moisture and wherever it touched the metal, caused rusting. The action works well, but the cylinder will not stay locked in place. It will rotate with the gun cocked. The cylinder stop is there, but does not move up into place, no doubt due to a broken spring. Surprisingly, the bore on this revolver is very fine to excellent. It is bright and shiny. The chambers do have a little rust visible. The grips are in very good condition. There are a few small dings and scratches from use. The inspector's cartouche on the left grip is faint but visible. With a little work, this could be made a great shooter. Stock no. 21880
