This is an original, Merwin, Hulbert, & Co. "Frontier Army" Double Action .44-40 Revolver. The Merwin, Hulbert was a very well made revolver and a serious competitor to the Colt and Smith & Wesson designs. It featured a unique ejection system. The entire barrel assembly is rotated to the right and pulled forward, with the cylinder, until the spent casings drop clear. It could then be rapidly reloaded and rotated back into position for firing. With practice, the revolver could be reloaded far faster than the Colt Single Action. These were produced in the 1880's. Exact numbers are unknown, but it is believed several thousand were made. This is a large frame Merwin "Frontier Army" with a top strap and 7" round barrel. It has a square butt, rather than the "Birdshead" grip of the Pocket Army. The frame is marked "Caliber Winchester 1873" which is the designation for .44-40 Winchester. This revolver is in superb, excellent condition. It retains nearly 100% (98%+) of its factory nickel finish. The case colors on the hammer remain vivid. The colors of the trigger and guard have faded a bit to a mottled gray. The revolver's mechanism works perfectly in double and single action. The bore and chambers are excellent. There is a professional repair to a very small chip on the bottom of the left grip. It is very well done and hard to see, and may actually be where a drop of something very slightly discolored the hard rubber. This is one of the finest Merwin, Hulbert revolvers I have ever seen. It is in superb condition and is a true Old West Six Shooter. Stock no. 21790
