Item No.: 8271 Price : SOLD
Description :
This is an original, Winchester Model 1876 Rifle made in 1884 and chambered for the .40-60 Winchester Center Fire cartridge. These rifles came to be known as the "Centennial Model" after their introduction in 1876. The '76 was a scaled up version of the Model 1873. It is very similar in appearance, but much larger. It was designed to compete with the big bore single shot rifles like the Sharps that were dominating the harvest of big game like the buffalo. This was the first Winchester lever action that allowed the use of true big game cartridges. The model 1876 was produced from 1876 until 1897. This is a third model 1876. This rifle is in antique very good condition. There are traces of the original blued finish remaining in protected areas. This is mostly around the edge of the side plates on the frame. The loading port cover remains blue as well. There is some blue in the protected area between the barrel and magazine tube. The majority of the rifle has a smooth brown patina. The mechanics and action work well. The rifle has a 28" round barrel. The bore is surprisingly good. There is some light pitting towards the breech end, but the majority of the bore is shiny and the rifling is sharp. The caliber is marked on the top of the barrel and on the brass lifter. The stock is very good as well, with a rich, dark red-brown color. There are a few small dings and scratches from use. This is a nice solid Centennial Model that works well and looks great! Stock no. 21728
