Item :	FINE, FLINTLOCK NEW ENGLAND MILITIA MUSKET

This is an original, Flintlock, New England Militia Musket of about .72 caliber. These were produced from about 1800 to 1830, a time when every able bodied man was a member of the state militia. These muskets were provided by the states to those individuals who did not have or could not afford arms of their own. Light in weight and styled like a sporting fowler, they served a dual purpose, providing meat for the table and a weapon for the common defense. These muskets had several features in common. They were generally plain, fitted with brass sporting style furniture, and sporting type locks. Barrels were about 39" in length, about .69 caliber, with a stud for affixing a bayonet. The barrels were generally pinned in place with no barrel bands. This musket is a bit nicer than most. It has a fine curly maple stock, rather than the usual walnut. It uses a Ketland sporting lock with a roller on the frizzen spring. It also has a separate bead front sight in addition to the bayonet lug. The barrel is a bit over 40" long. The musket is in fine condition, with an overall smooth brown patina. It is in its original flintlock configuration, never converted to percussion. The lock works very well. The smooth bore is very dark and has some significant pitting. The brass furniture has a nice yellow bronze patina. The stock is in fine condition, with no evidence of repairs. The grain of the maple is striking. There are a few small dings and scratches from use. The butt plate tang is beginning to lift just a little from its mortise. Unfortunately, the original wooden ramrod is missing, so one will need to be made. This would be a nice little weekend project. This is a beautiful, early American flintlock militia musket.
