Item No.: 8232 Price : SOLD
Description :
This is an original, .69 caliber, U.S. Model 1816 Flintlock Musket manufactured by H. Osborne of Springfield, Massachusetts. The Model 1816 was produced for a longer time span than any other American flintlock. It was manufactured at both Springfield and Harpers Ferry, as well as by a number of contractors. The total produced by Osborne is unknown, but they are one of the scarcer contract M1816 muskets. This musket is in very good to fine condition. It appears to be in its original, flintlock configuration, but I can't guarantee that it is not a re-conversion. The metal has an overall pewter patina with a speckling of brown. There is some significant pitting on the barrel in the area around the pan, and some erosion of the touch hole. There is a deep pit or small dent in the barrel on the right side of the barrel just behind the upper band. The brass pan has blackened. The bore is very dark and heavily pitted. The lock needs some work. The mainspring is weak and the trigger will not return after releasing the hammer. If you manually push the trigger forward, the lock will cock and fire, but very sluggishly. Then the trigger must be pushed back into the forward position. The stock is in very good condition. It has been given a clear coat of some type, that looks like a Tru-Oil finish. There is a chip at the back of the barrel tang. There is a repaired crack at the bottom of the lock panel. This is a good looking, representative example of the Model 1816 musket, and made by a scarce contractor. Stock no. 21620
